Ingredients
Scale
Optional Whipped Cream Topping and Rim
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) heavy cream or whipping cream
- Black sanding sugar
Milkshake Ingredients
- 2 cups (475 ml) vanilla ice cream, packed
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup (60 to 120 ml) milk (any type except canned coconut milk)
- 3 tablespoons (26 grams) black cocoa powder, plus more if needed
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Whipped Cream: Pour the heavy cream into a bowl and whip at medium speed until it begins to thicken. Increase speed to high and continue whipping until stiff peaks form. Chill in the refrigerator while you prepare the milkshake.
- Prepare Glass Rim (Optional): Pour black sanding sugar into a shallow dish. Brush maple syrup onto the rim of your glass with a small pastry brush or dip the rim in maple syrup, then immediately dip into the sanding sugar. Tap off excess sugar and place the glass in the freezer for a few minutes to set the sugar rim.
- Make the Milkshake: Add the vanilla ice cream, milk, black cocoa powder, maple syrup, and vanilla extract to a blender. Blend until smooth with no lumps. If the milkshake is too thick, add more milk to reach your desired consistency. Taste and add additional black cocoa powder if a deeper color and flavor are preferred. Note: The shake may initially appear dark grey but will darken to nearly black as it sits.
- Serve: Pour the milkshake into the prepared glass. Top with the whipped cream and add sprinkles if desired. Serve immediately for best texture and presentation.
Notes
- Any milk type except canned coconut milk can be used; unsweetened cashew milk is a good paleo/vegan alternative.
- Omit sprinkles for paleo or vegan diets.
- Vegan ice creams that are airy may not require additional milk; denser ice creams will benefit from up to 1/2 cup (120 ml) milk.
- The shake yield varies from 1 1/3 cups (307 ml) with airy ice cream to about 2 1/2 cups (591 ml) with dense ice cream and added milk.
