Description
A classic and comforting Green Bean Casserole made with tender green beans, creamy mushroom soup, and topped with crispy fried onions. This easy-to-make side dish is perfect for holiday dinners or any family meal.
Ingredients
Scale
Green Beans
- 4 cups frozen cut green beans (see notes for canned or fresh beans)
Casserole Sauce
- 10.5 ounces condensed cream of mushroom soup (1 can)
- ½ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon seasoned salt (more to taste)
Topping
- 1½ cups crispy fried onions, divided
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F to ensure it’s ready for baking the casserole.
- Cook the green beans: Bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil. Add the frozen green beans and boil for about 2 to 3 minutes until they are tender-crisp. Drain the beans well.
- Combine ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cooked green beans with the condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, seasoned salt, and 1 cup of the crispy fried onions. Stir everything together until evenly mixed.
- Assemble the casserole: Transfer the green bean mixture into a 2-quart or 8×8-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- Bake the casserole: Bake the dish uncovered in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the mixture is bubbly and heated through.
- Add topping and finish baking: Remove the casserole from the oven and gently stir it. Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of crispy fried onions over the top, then return the casserole to the oven for an additional 10 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crispy.
Notes
- Green beans: You can use canned or fresh green beans instead of frozen. For canned, drain 2 cans (14½ ounces each) of cut green beans. For fresh, use 1½ pounds trimmed and simmered for about 7-8 minutes.
- Optional additions: Add 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese to the sauce for a cheesy twist. You can also add fried mushrooms, garlic, onions, or shallots for extra flavor.
- Cheese tips: Mix cheese directly into the sauce or sprinkle it on top after stirring. Mixing in the cheese creates a creamy sauce.
- Make ahead: Prepare the casserole up to 48 hours in advance. Store the fried onion topping separately and add just before baking. Allow the casserole to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking. You may need to extend baking time by 10 minutes if baking from chilled.
- Leftovers: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days.
