Description

This classic Green Bean Casserole is a must-have for holiday gatherings. Fresh green beans smothered in a creamy mushroom sauce and topped with crispy fried onions, this dish is a crowd-pleaser.

Green Beans:

  • 2 pounds fresh green beans, washed and trimmed

Mushroom Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup salted butter
  • 8 ounces baby bella mushrooms, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream OR half & half OR whole milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 cups freshly grated parmesan cheese

Topping:

  • 2 cups French fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: to 375° F.
  2. Prepare green beans: Spread green beans in a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  3. Make mushroom sauce: Melt butter in a skillet, add mushrooms, salt, and pepper. Sauté, then stir in flour. Add cream, stir until bubbles form. Stir in cheese until melted.
  4. Combine: Pour sauce over green beans, top with fried onions.
  5. Bake: Uncovered for 45 minutes. Cover with foil and bake 15 more minutes if beans are too crisp.

Notes

  • Make it in advance: Prepare casserole up to combining beans with sauce, cover, and refrigerate. Top with onions before baking.
