Ingredients
Scale
For the Apples
- 6 large apples, 2½ pounds, peeled, cored, and chopped into ¾-inch pieces
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt
Crumble Topping
- ¾ cup whole rolled oats
- ½ cup all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt
- ½ cup cold unsalted butter, 1 stick, cubed, plus more for the pan
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.
- Prepare the Apples: In a large mixing bowl, combine the peeled, cored, and chopped apples with 2 tablespoons flour, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, lemon juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss everything together thoroughly to evenly coat the apples. Spread this apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- Make the Crumble Topping: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter. Use two forks, a pastry cutter, or your hands to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized chunks.
- Assemble and Bake: Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish. Cover the dish loosely with foil and bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the apples are bubbling.
- Finish Baking Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until the apples are tender and the topping turns golden brown and crisp.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the apple crisp from the oven and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. This resting time allows the filling to thicken slightly and enhances the flavors.
Notes
- Use tart apple varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best balance of sweetness and tartness.
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of ground cloves or allspice to the apple mixture.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an indulgent dessert.
- This apple crisp can be reheated in the oven or microwave; cover loosely to prevent drying out.
- To make ahead, assemble unbaked and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.
