Description

A flavorful and easy-to-make Beef Lo Mein recipe featuring tender strips of beef, fresh vegetables, and perfectly cooked noodles tossed in a savory homemade sauce. This classic Chinese-American dish comes together quickly on the stovetop, making it ideal for a satisfying weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Noodles and Sauce

  • 8 oz lo mein noodles (cooked according to instructions)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup hot boiled water
  • 1 tbsp Beef Better Than Bouillon
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar

Beef and Vegetables

  • oil (olive or sesame) for frying
  • 1 lb beef (thinly sliced into strips)
  • 2 large carrots (diced into two-inch pieces)
  • 2 cup broccoli (cut into two-inch pieces)
  • 1 large onion (diced into two-inch pieces)
  • 4 garlic cloves (pressed)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, dissolve 1 tbsp Beef Better Than Bouillon and 2 tbsp brown sugar in 1/4 cup of hot boiled water. Stir in 3 tbsp soy sauce and set the sauce mixture aside to allow flavors to meld.
  2. Cook Beef: Preheat a hot skillet with 1 tsp sesame oil. Add the thinly sliced beef strips and cook until golden brown on all sides. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté Onions: Using the same skillet, add a bit more sesame oil if needed and sauté the diced onions until golden brown. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Cook Vegetables: In the same skillet, sauté the diced carrots until softened. Then add the broccoli and cook all together for about 3 minutes until tender-crisp. Return the sautéed onions to the skillet along with the pressed garlic, stirring to combine.
  5. Combine Beef and Sauce: Add the cooked beef back into the skillet with the vegetables. Pour the prepared sauce over everything and let it simmer for about 2 minutes to allow the flavors to blend and ingredients to heat through.
  6. Toss in Noodles: Add the cooked lo mein noodles to the skillet and toss everything together thoroughly to ensure the noodles are well-coated with sauce and combined with the beef and vegetables.
  7. Serve: Transfer the beef lo mein to a large serving dish. Toss gently again before serving to bring all ingredients together and enjoy while hot.

Notes

  • For best flavor, use fresh vegetables and thinly sliced beef.
  • You can substitute beef with chicken or tofu for variations.
  • Adjust soy sauce and brown sugar amounts to taste depending on your preferred saltiness and sweetness.
  • Use sesame oil for authentic flavor; however, olive oil can be used as a substitute for frying if necessary.
  • Serve immediately after cooking to enjoy the best texture and taste.
